jerome derradji received a call by one of chicago’s most renowned record dealer. it went like this: hey jerome, ive got all these reel to reel tapes of chicago house stuff. you want to take a look? less than 24 hours later, more than 160 reels were purchased and safely hauled back to the still music office and jerome got to work. in fact, these reels - that were lost for more than 20 years - contain some incredible stuff that we’ll be releasing in the years to come but right now it’s time to jack! around 50 of these tapes are dj mixes that were broadcasted on wgci and wbmx in the mid to late eighties mostly with the hot mix 5. so jerome decided to start a series of cassettes titled jack to share the absolute greatness of these mixes (and to raise enough funds to finance the transfer and licensing of the more crazy stuff that’s in the stack of reels) here is our first series with mixes from frankie knuckles, steve “silk” hurley, chicago mystery - devastating daryl and a few unknown mixes that were too essential to skip. these mixes were played on the radio only once and were lost until today. this series is an absolute window back to the heydays of chicago house music. all the mixes were professionally transferred and remastered to the best of our abilities.

unlimited source’s ‘down in the cellar’ ep from 1982. up-front uk jazz-funk fusion via luton and neighbouring hertfordshire that cuts across genres and has stood the test of time to cut across generations 35-plus years later and become a dance-floor under-the-radar essential. features their previously unreleased cover of the skip scarborough penned ‘love ballad’ alongside the sought-after top-drawer jazz dancer ‘nicoca nicola’. plus some break-beats on that title cut.

the nu-rons, were a family group consisting of two sets of brothers and cousins, the four young men in question being brothers daryl howard and raymond gibson (daryl’s mother registered him under his father’s surname of howard and raymond under her maiden name of gibson) together with otho bateman and charles bateman. they were all born and raised in salem, new jersey and from the age of ten and eleven began singing with a fifth member and gibson brother rudolph in a group called the gospel 5. they eventually decided to crossover to secular music and as a group known for their energetic dance routines they came up with the new performing name of ‘the nu-rons’ (taken from the word ‘neuron’ which is a cell that transmits nerve impulses). however rudolph was soon to leave the group due to physical illness. also daryl howard and charles bateman had also been part of a working group known as the devotions prior to becoming the nu-ron’s.

after an almost instant sell out last time around, london label tone dropout return for vol. 5 of their series of 12-s. an acid washed ep drawing from the ranks of their ever growing family, each of the four tracks celebrates the timeless appeal of the silver boxed 303 after the rain by label regulars the he-men opens with the soothing patter of raindrops, a hypnotic acid line rising from the deluge to morph into a moody house ride drenched in its own outbursts of spectral sound. dawl is also back on home turf with asylum , following a repress of his sought after solo ep for pareidolia recordings. less about seeking refuge than losing your mind it motors along with steely intent, darkly funky bleeps, throbbing acid and industrial percussion embracing the twin legacies of sheffield and detroit. italian dj and producer robbenspierre launched tone dropout s digital offshoot with a full ep last year and makes his vinyl debut for the label with quarta vanitas . bubbling breakbeat house, a trancey euphoric lead and swirling ethereal vocals take you deep into the thick smoke and laser light of the 4am dance floor. in the wake of an appearance on tone dropout vol.4, corporeal face returns with another rave induced vision. trapped on one, the rushing warehouse breakbeats and bass of permo erupt into waves of acid, fractured vocals and serotonin-depleted synths adding a dark edge to the ecstasy.

when the one o ones originally released radio cosmo disco back in 1977 it was confined to 7inch, which is no place for such majestic cosmic groove exploration. now best records are continuing their quest to repress every hidden gem of italian dance music and beyond, and they re doing radio cosmo 101 the right way. the full disco version of the track gets to stretch out on a full 12inch side, and does so in a dreamy haze of feel good funk. you can still hear the radio edit on the flip, and the original instrumental jam is included for those who want to drift away on those sumptuous tones of the backing track.
